COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WAX, GENERAL PURPOSE, SOLVENT TYPE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification P-W-158
This description covers two types and classes of general purpose solvent waxes. The waxes are intended primarily use on wooden or cork floors, but may be used on painted or sealed wood floors, terrazzo, ceramic, marble, and tile. They are not recommended for use on asphalt, vinyl or rubber composition floor tiles.
The wax shall be of the following types and classes :
Type I – Liquid
Class 1 – Without Silica
Class 2 – With Silica
Type II
Salient characteristics.
Types I and II wax shall consist of natural or synthetic waxes or a mixture thereof dissolved or dispersed in volatile organic solvent consisting of turpentine or volatile petroleum distillates or a mixture thereof, suitable for application at 18o to 30o C (64o to 86o F). Type I wax shall be a homogenous free-flowing liquid and type II shall be a soft, homogenous paste.

1/Silica content. Weigh a 10 – gram sample into a pre-ignited and tared platinum crucible. Add sufficient ashless cotton to absorb the sample and ignite slowly at first over a Meker burner. Place in a muffle furnace at 800o C for 30 minutes. Cool, desiccate, and weigh. This is the weight of ash. Moisten the residue with 1 to 2 ml. of water, add 4 to 5 drops of sulfuric acid.
