COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ADSORBENT MATERIAL (Oils, Acids, Caustics, Solvents and Toxics)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
1. Salient characteristics. The adsorbent material shall be inert and an inorganic mixture of silicates, aluminates, with small amounts of ferric oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, potassium oxide and alkalies. The product shall contain less than 1 percent free silicates. The end product shall contain no organic materials. The product shall be nonflammable and noncombustible, and shall not hold a static charge, It shall have a specific gravity of 1.75 to 2.40 (250c) and shall be determined in accordance with method B of ASTM D-891. The bulk density of the product shall be 0.5 to 0.9 gm/mL. The product shall be finely grained, order less, dust free, containing fine white/gray granules. It shall be insoble in water and shall not contain any wood fibers/sawdust particles. The adsorbent material shall not change the pH of the liquid being adsorbed. The product shall contain no hazardous materials as defined by EPA/OSHA.
2. Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description, conforms to the producer’s own drawing, specification, standard, and quality assurance practices and is the same product sold in the commercial marketplace, except for the additional requirements/characteristics specified herein. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
3. Packaging.
3.1 Packing. When procured by the Government, 25 pounds of adsorbent material shall be packed in a multi-wall bag with an inner polyethylene liner.
3.2 Palletization. When specified (see S.2), the adsorbent material, packed as specified, shall be palletized on a 4-ay entry pallet in accordance with load type XV of MIL-STD-147. Each prepared load shall be bonded by film bonding means O or P. Interlocking of loads shall be effected by reversing the pattern of each course.
